A night with Liverpool's Star Jan Molby — Glitz around the Globe

I admit that due to my many monthly trips I seem to look out of Malta and sometimes I forget about good events happening on my own door step.

Summer 2019 is shaping up nicely and if you like Football, Hottest DJ’s and Comedy, please do take notice. On the 20th June Liverpool legend Jan Molby is going on stage in Valletta. I grew up watching Liverpool with my father, he was and still is an avid fan so much so that he has a tattoo on his arm dedicated to the team.

This event sounds like an evening tailormade for my dad, but when you know the full story behind the evening, then I believe this could be one of THE events of the year in Malta. Especially since Liverpool took their 6th Champions League Trophy home.

Let’s meet the guy who is behind this unique Charity Event!

I am proud to see the work and planning done by my ex colleague Allan Aasterud, and I will give you two reasons for attending “An evening with Jan Molby” at City Theatre; Passion and Respect. So I met him for a pint to get to know more about the event and here’s what he had to say:

You have from being an iGaming veteran moved on to do recruitment and now event management. How come?

No special reason really.
I learnt a lot being 19 years in iGaming but I was looking for a change. New Challenges are always welcome and I felt I had something undone. Working in recruitment gives me the chance to meet people, connect with  new talents and follow up interesting candidates. The event idea was actually me thinking of creative ways to do recruitment marketing together with Click Recruitment.

All these different networking events and HR meet-ups, but I felt something was missing. I wanted to keep our candidates connected to us while we find new talents in the market, and that’s how this event idea started to grow. You got to dare to be different and creative. Now on the night we will have candidates helping us to make it a successful event, gaming companies have joined as co sponsors and we have invited interesting talents to enjoy the evening in Valletta. It’s a networking event which is built around 3 talented individuals on stage. I’m super excited!

I have a bit of experience from events before, but “An evening with Jan Molby” is the biggest project of my career. It’s a great test , but we have great people involved and I feel confident we can execute with style.

My dad says that Jan Molby in the Liverpool shirt was something real special.

True, a great player. A fan’s favourite from 1984 and it has never changed. A charismatic football star and he was one of my childhood heroes when I grew up as a kid back in Norway. Then it feels special and weird sitting in his kitchen a few decades later talking about our event in Malta in June. I dont really feel pressure as I know I got the backing from Molby and Steve Heywood, the Managing Director of Click Recruitment (www.clickrecruiting.co.uk). When you deal with winners, you have to perform, haha.

You got 3 strong acts lined up on the night. On behalf of Malta, thank you for bringing them to Malta.

Great! yes, we have LIVE music from Tricia McTeague who have been touring big arenas in Germany with the artist Schiller, and the show will be hosted and compered by Jamie Sutherland.

Getting Tricia to come to Malta is a real scoop.  Her brother lives in Balluta, and she has many friends and fans here – and she is a good friend of the Molby family after doing several charity gigs for them. Tricia is actually one of the biggest artists to come to Malta in 2019, and I am sure people will agree with me on the night. A wonderful talent on stage.

Jan Molby from Denmark is a legend among Liverpool supporters. First time ever in Malta?

Yes, I have tried for years to invite him over, but a busy schedule as he works for Danish Viasat following Premier league and Champions league. Now we got him and I cant wait to see him on stage. He’s a great speaker, very knowledgable about football and he has had an incredible career. This guy knows more about Liverpool FC than most people in football. And as important, his wife and Jan are two amazing people with big hearts who spend a lot of time raising  large amounts for local charities.

I see you are bringing the charity element to Malta on the 20th June?

We will all be together – and there are others who have shared similar stories. One of the VIP tables will have a German guy who will wear a Cologne shirt and bringing a Schalke scarf to honour his dad who passed away due to a heart attack early this year.

That’s why i believe Jan Molby in Malta can save lives.

Carlsberg Fan Zone with beers, burgers, Live music and lots of banter. I know you well and by the sounds of it, it looks like you want to create a match day experience.

Yes, exactly. it might be ambitious, but we are creating our own networking event with international people in iGaming, media and passionate Maltese supporters of Liverpool and local clubs.  This is not a champagne party and canapees, this is working class and real atmosphere. It opens 17.00 and Tricia will rock the stage while DJ Colin Fitz will be the DJ. We have even prepared a special Match Day programme for the guests.

Nice to see you in my shoes, how are you finding the challenges every events manager faces? Would you like to tell me about them?

Plenty. haha. We have built the whole fan zone from scratch, but we wanted to be hands-on all the way through. If it would be an easy setup, then everybody can do it. I want people to feel VIP even if you pay 25 Euro or 100 Euro, and we are happy with our pricing categories. Logistically we want it to run smoothly, people to get served and just enjoy themselves.

We will have 3 generations of supporters coming through the entrance to see Jan Molby, Tricia and Jamie Sutherland, and that means we need to look after the older people. Football passion has no age, and we want to include everyone. War veterans, ex pats, people with physical disabilities. Safety comes first, and we will not sell tickets on the day of the event. Make sure you buy your ticket now otherwise there will be disappointment. Max capacity is 500 people and there is no time to wait to secure your ticket.

The VIP tickets have been sold out for weeks?

Yes, the 8 VIP tables went fast. I think we could have sold another 10 VIP tables, but this is our seating plan – and that’s how it will be. VIP and Platinum includes Meet & Greet with Jan Molby from 19.00 which we will make a special occasion for the punters. Tricia will move inside and warm up the crowd before host of the night Jamie Sutherland will take over the reins from around 20.00 and then the man himself Jan Molby will take us down the memory lane. Sutherland has an excellent reputation as a compere for sporting celebs etc and I am really looking forward to seeing them all on stage.

Allan, I sincerely wish you good luck! Really excited about it all!!!

I might need it. In 2014 i was invited to a barbecue at Molby’s family house in England, and there were great atmosphere and the traditional garden games. I managed to break my ankle playing badminton in his garden. Let’s hope I stay out of trouble this time and rather highlight the benefit, and life-saving potential, of routine medical screenings.
